Apple Crisp

I don't share a lot of recipes on here but I promise you, I cook. Not like Julia Child but I'm pretty confident I can do better than Hamburger Helper. I actually enjoy cooking but with 2 kids in the house, I dread dinner time most days. If I'm not prepared ahead of time, 5 o'clock sneaks up on me and I end up chopping up a salad, or heating hot dogs or, for extra special days, "every man for himself."

Anyway, in the holiday seasons, I really like baking. I like the way it smells, the way it tastes and the festive way it makes me feel. The other day I baked FOR THE VERY LAST TIME IN THIS KITCHEN (everything is sentimental to me lately). Two pumpkin pies and yummy apple crisp made from our Oak Glen apples.

If you're curious about my pumpkin pie recipe, read the back of this can. I follow the directions each and every year and they never stear me wrong.

And here is the apple crisp recipe:

Ingredients for the filling:
10 cups all-purpose apples, peeled, cored and sliced
1 cup white sugar
1 tablespoon all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon ground cinnamon
1/2 cup water

Ingredients for the topping:
1 cup quick-cooking oats
1 cup all-purpose flour
1 cup packed brown sugar
1/4 teaspoon baking soda
1/4 teaspoon baking powder
1/2 cup butter, melted

Directions:
Preheat oven to 350 degrees.
Place the sliced apples in a 9x13 inch pan.
Mix the white sugar, flour and ground cinnamon together and sprinkle over apples.
Drizzle water evenly over it all just wetting the sugar mixture.
Combine all topping ingredients and crumble evenly over apple mixture.
Bake at 350 degrees for about 45 minutes.

If you don't have one of these apple slicer thingys you need one. The first time I made this, I spent a veerrryy long time peeling and coring apples. It was horrible.

These are my apples once they went through my trusty little slicer.

And this is what it looks like just before baking.

Trust me, it's scrumptious. I think it is even better the next day.
