Our Fourth was awesome. We had no tantrums, no screaming or crying, no injuries, and everyone was finally healthy. (I have been absent from blogging because Brygit was throwing up for a few days there). This was the first year since having kids that made me feel nostalgic for my own childhood. Liam was way too excited and asked about fireworks all day. And when we finally started he watched with the widest eyes I have ever seen. Of course, this child has been to Disneyland too many times and when it was over he pointed to the sky and asked, "When do you think they're going to start?" Watching him reminded me so much of being a kid and feeling so anxious for the sun to hurry up and set. I would sit on the tailgate of my dad's truck and watch my brother play with fire while my mom called out nervous warnings. We always made my dad dance in the light from the strobe light fireworks because he always made us laugh. I felt a twinge of sadness at those memories as I miss my dad terribly but I also feel so much joy knowing that those memories are what I have taken with me. I seriously don't remember fighting with my siblings or refusing to go to bed. I'm positive those things happened but they aren't what I remember. With that in mind, we returned home, gave in to Liam's request to sleep in his clothes and asked him if he would like to substitute our nightly story time with watching the big fireworks from our balcony. Note to self: always live in a house on a hill with a balcony facing the valley. After the kids crashed, Paul and I went back out and watched some more. And it's now 9am and I am the only one awake which is really the best part.
